Gulnar Red Mulmul Sleeveless Top
Renu judged every white mark on this top from the reverse, because bakhiya is worked from behind and bakhiya is the only stitch she used. Red sits between the white thread and the eye, so the pattern reads softened rather than bright. Gulnar is the pomegranate blossom, red before the fruit, and the mulmul she hand embroidered in Lucknow runs 70–75 GSM, woven from 100% cotton.

The stitches
- Bakhiya (shadow work)Herringbone worked on the reverse of sheer cloth, so the motif glows through as a soft shadow, the signature of true Chikankari.
How to wear it
- Bakhiya lays its herringbone on the inner face of the cloth, so the embroidery is what the wearer feels and the red is what she shows.
- Light cotton creases at the bend of an elbow, and this top has no sleeve, so a working day puts fewer creases in it than a sleeved cotton would.
- One stitch is all the handwork here, so a dupatta worked harder than this can sit over the red without the two competing on the same shoulder.
