Geru Rust Orange Mulmul Kurta and Cambric Pant Set

Hathkati works by taking thread away, not adding it, so the white lines down this rust orange mulmul are openings, bound by hand. The maker hand embroidered a buti at the end of each line in Lucknow, phanda knots at its crown and chana patti leaves in threes at its foot. Geru is red ochre, and the kurta runs 70–75 GSM over cambric pants on an elastic waist.

The stitches
- Hathkati (open drawn work)Threads drawn out and re-bound entirely by hand into airy open bands of drawn-thread work.
- Chana Patti (gram leaf)Gram-leaf trios scattered along creepers, small leaves in threes.
- Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
How to wear it
- The kurta's single pocket sits in the side seam at the hip, which keeps the front panel clear for the drawn thread lines.
- The cambric pants close with an elastic waist and nothing else, so there is no hook to fasten and the waist gives when you sit.
- Rust orange and white are the set's two colours, so oxidised silver at the wrist and ear adds shine without adding a third.

Each piece is embroidered and finished by hand, so a measurement may vary by up to 1 inch. That variation is the signature of handwork, not a defect. The first table measures the kurta and the second the pants, which sit on an elastic waist.
