Dhuan Black and Grey Mulmul Kurta and Cambric Pant Set
Dhuan, the Urdu for smoke, hangs grey, and grey is the thread Meenakshi hand embroidered over this black mulmul in Lucknow. Ghas patti fans its grass blades in mirrored strokes, phanda knots each flower centre, pechni spirals a laid line into a cord raised enough to trace. Warp and weft run 60 D through both cloths, the mulmul kurta at 70–75 GSM and the cambric pants under it.

The stitches

- Pechni (twisted wrap)Tepchi wrapped over with thread into a raised, spiralled cord.
- Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
How to wear it
- The kurta is slit at both sides, so it sits over the cambric pants it arrives with or over a narrow trouser already in the wardrobe.
- Elastic gathers the pant waist, so there is no waist measurement to get right.
- Two pockets in the kurta take a phone and keys, which is the difference between carrying a bag to a desk and not.
