Jharokha Purple Mulmul Yoke Top
Hema Devi worked this top in Lucknow, moving between three stitches without pulling a 70–75 GSM cloth out of tension. White thread hand embroidered on the purple ground: bakhiya goes in from the back, keel puts a point at the middle of a flower, phanda knots the buds tight. The mulmul is 100% cotton, and a jharokha is the window an Awadhi house looks out from.

The stitches
- Bakhiya (shadow work)Herringbone worked on the reverse of sheer cloth, so the motif glows through as a soft shadow, the signature of true Chikankari.
- Keel KanganKeel sets the pointed flower centre. Kangan rings it like a bangle around the motif.
- Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
How to wear it
- A long sleeved tee worn under this top, not a jacket over it, carries the same piece into a cold month and leaves the purple on the outside.
- Cotton this light packs flat and creases where it folds, so hang it the night before instead of pulling it out of a bag on the day.
- The neckline is round rather than a V, so a pendant on a long chain hangs clear below it where a choker would follow the neckline itself.
