Chaukhat Yellow Mulmul Yoke Top

Chaukhat is a door frame, wood around an opening and nothing more, and the top is much the same: no sleeve seam, no collar, a yoke, a round neck. Yellow mulmul carries a single thread colour, white, hand embroidered by Suman Kumari in Lucknow, keel pointing the flower centres, phanda knotting each bud, ghas patti laying the leaves. The cloth runs 70–75 GSM, 100% of it cotton.

Suman Kumari started working as a teenager after her father passed away, so she could support her mother and younger brother through Chikankari.

The stitches
- Ghas Patti (grass leaf)Blades of grass worked in mirrored V-strokes, leaf-work that fans across hems and vines.
- Keel KanganKeel sets the pointed flower centre. Kangan rings it like a bangle around the motif.
- Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
How to wear it
- The top carries two colours, yellow cloth and white thread, so a bottom in either holds the outfit at two, where a printed one adds a pattern.
- Bare shoulders and a hip length hem make it a morning top, and a straight trouser under it takes the same one through an office day.
- Cotton right through and a cold hand wash put the top into a normal week rather than into a box kept for occasions.
