Roshandan Sea Blue Mulmul Yoke Top
70–75 GSM puts no bulk in a gather, so this sea blue top's body meets its yoke on a flat seam. Four stitches, all white on 100% cotton mulmul, hand embroidered by Sashi in Lucknow: bakhiya crossing its herringbone underneath, ghas patti mirroring two strokes into a blade, keel pointing a flower centre, phanda knotting one the thumb finds. A roshandan lets light down from high in an Awadhi wall.

Embroidered by
Sashi learned Chikankari in Lucknow after her marriage. She moved to the city from outside it, saw the women in her neighbourhood working at the frame, and took up the craft there.

The stitches
- Bakhiya (shadow work)Herringbone worked on the reverse of sheer cloth, so the motif glows through as a soft shadow, the signature of true Chikankari.
- Ghas Patti (grass leaf)Blades of grass worked in mirrored V-strokes, leaf-work that fans across hems and vines.
- Keel KanganKeel sets the pointed flower centre. Kangan rings it like a bangle around the motif.
- Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
How to wear it
- The fit is taken at the yoke and the cloth runs loose below it, so the size to pick is the one that suits the shoulders and the chest.
- Motifs are worked down the body and again near the hem, so the top is meant to hang out over a bottom rather than be tucked into one.
- The neck ties shut with a knot, and the yoke under it carries the embroidery at its densest, so leave the shoulders clear of a dupatta.
