Colour does no work on this top, thread and ground a single white, so relief and shadow carry the pattern instead. Manisha hand embroidered both stitches into the mulmul in Lucknow, bakhiya worked underneath until each motif reads as a shade of the cloth itself, phanda tying raised knots on the face. Kapas names the boll the cotton is picked from, 100% cotton, 70–75 GSM.

The stitches

Bakhiya (shadow work)Herringbone worked on the reverse of sheer cloth, so the motif glows through as a soft shadow, the signature of true Chikankari.
Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.

How to wear it

Buttons run down the front to a round neck, so a short chain sits above the closure and a longer one follows the line of it.
Sleeveless and hip length is a summer cut, so an open shrug or a jacket is what carries the top into an air conditioned office.
An ivory or cream bottom lands a shade away from this white and reads as a near miss, so either match it exactly or go to a colour.
