Amaltas is the laburnum that drips gold over Lucknow in May, the yellow this kali kurta borrows. Sashi hand embroidered five stitches across the mulmul in Lucknow, bakhiya, phanda, pechni, chana patti and keel kangan. Calf length with a swinging kali flare, pintuck detailing and a round buttoned neck, sunshine cut loose.

The stitches

Bakhiya (shadow work)Herringbone worked on the reverse of sheer cloth, so the motif glows through as a soft shadow, the signature of true Chikankari.
Phanda (knot)Tight millet-seed knots placed one by one to build jasmine buds and flower centres.
Pechni (twisted wrap)Tepchi wrapped over with thread into a raised, spiralled cord.
Chana Patti (gram leaf)Gram-leaf trios scattered along creepers, small leaves in threes.
Keel KanganKeel sets the pointed flower centre. Kangan rings it like a bangle around the motif.

How to wear it

White juttis and a silver hoop and done.
It carries festive lunches without a dupatta.

Each piece is embroidered and finished by hand, so a measurement may vary by up to 1 inch. That variation is the signature of handwork, not a defect. The hip figure is taken across the kali flare, laid flat and doubled, which is why it runs wider than a straight kurta.
